Testimonials

About me

I'm Benjamin van der Weerdt, 31 years old and I live in Gaastmeer, Friesland together with my girlfriend Floortje and dog Flynn. In 2017 after a turbulent student life, I signed up for my first marathon in Rotterdam. I hadn’t trained properly, knew nothing about nutrition or pacing, and I didn’t even use Strava or a smartwatch. But I loved every kilometre. When I crossed the finish line and let it all sink in, I knew I was hooked and that I wanted to improve.I got myself a coach and started improving year after year and I became addicted to the grind. What began as running only soon grew into cycling and eventually triathlon. I’ve built a solid foundation, stayed injury-free, and steadily improved in all three disciplines. There have been ups and downs, but I’ve always focused on the long game: staying consistent, staying healthy, and enjoying the process. PRs are great, but the reason you get them is usually because you’re happy, balanced, and injury-free.Along the way, more and more people started asking me for help. First friends, then friends-of-friends, and eventually people I didn’t even know. That interest grew, and in 2020 I started Grutto Endurance.I’ve spent years training with a coach, racing often, trying new things, making mistakes, and learning what truly works. Along the way, I dove into the theory behind endurance training, how the body adapts, how to recover, and how to improve sustainably. That mix of 8+ years of experience and solid knowledge means I can help you train smarter and reach your goals. What I love most about coaching is building real relationships, understanding each athlete’s life, goals, challenges, and personality and blending all of that into a training plan that actually works for them. I always look at the bigger picture. Some of my personal highlights:
- 2:38:03 Marathon (Hamburg)
- 1:13:11 Half Marathon (Egmond)
- 33:39 10km
- 8:39:29 Ironman
- 4:06:16 Half Ironman
- 2:00:12 Olympic distance
- Qualified and raced the 70.3 World Championships in 2024 (Taupo, New Zealand)
- Qualified and raced the Ironman World Championships (Nice, France) in 2023.
- Won my age group (30-34) at Ironman 70.3 Westfriesland in 2024 and came 3rd overall.

Why Grutto Endurance?

One of my guilty pleasures, when I’m not doing sports, is birdwatching. Here in Friesland, especially in spring and summer, I’m surrounded by Grutto’s (Godwit in English, but I’ll stick to the Dutch name). They’re beautiful birds and definitely one of my favourites. On every run or ride, I spot multiple Grutto’s, and I even start to recognise pairs in certain locations year after year. Not only are they magnificent to watch, they have incredible endurance as well. Grutto’s are long-distance migratory birds and even hold the record for the longest non-stop flight of any bird, about 11,000 km from Alaska to New Zealand. Before migration, they can double their body weight in fat, which fuels their epic flights. Their bodies are extremely efficient at energy management and long-term stamina, allowing them to survive extreme challenges. So when I was thinking of a name for my coaching business, the connection to a Grutto felt natural, a bird that embodies endurance, resilience, and persistence, just like the athletes I work with.
